Karachi: A Pakistan-bound liquefied natural gas carrier, the Marshall Islands-flagged Al Mayeda, was attacked near the strategically volatile Strait of Hormuz, throwing the country’s immediate energy supply into uncertainty. The vessel was transporting an LNG shipment from Qatar to Pakistan and changed its course immediately following the strike. The incident occurred despite documented efforts by Pakistani authorities, who had reportedly secured prior safe-passage clearance from Iranian officials for the vessel’s transit through the critical maritime corridor.

If the shipment fails to reach its destination, Pakistan may be forced to acquire replacement LNG on the international spot market. Turning to the spot market at this juncture could prove highly expensive, as global gas prices have surged to more than three times their pre-war levels, threatening to exacerbate the country’s energy import costs ahead of peak winter demand.
